SuperFlush: How to Clear Cloudy or Discolored Water

Cloudy, brown, or blackish water can sometimes appear in toilet bowls, tubs, or fixtures. This is often caused by trapped debris inside the system and can usually be resolved with a super flush. This guide explains when a super flush is needed and how to perform it correctly.

When a Super Flush Is Needed

A super flush may be required if:

  • The system was not fully flushed during initial startup

  • There was a recent water main break or disturbance

  • Debris entered the system from the municipal supply

  • Discolored or cloudy water appears when fixtures are run

In most cases, a super flush resolves the issue.

What a Super Flush Does

A super flush extends the backwash and rinse cycles to remove excess debris from the system. By holding the valve in specific modes without power, the system continues flushing while maintaining its position.

How to Start the Super Flush

  1. Press and hold the regen button

  2. Allow the system to move into backwash mode

  3. Once backwash begins and the countdown starts, unplug the unit

The system will continue backwashing even without power.

Extended Backwash Process

  • Leave the unit unplugged for 15 to 20 minutes

  • Check the drain line where water is discharging

  • Use a white bucket if needed to observe water clarity

  • Continue backwashing until the water runs completely clear

Transitioning to Rinse Mode

  1. Plug the unit back in

  2. Allow the countdown to finish

  3. Press and release the regen button to advance stages

  4. Press and release until the system reaches rinse mode

Once rinse mode starts and the countdown begins, unplug the unit again.

Extended Rinse Process

  • Allow the system to rinse for about 10 minutes

  • The rinse water is what normally flows into the home

  • Collect water from the drain using a white bucket

  • Confirm the water is clear before proceeding

Returning the System to Service

  1. Plug the unit back in

  2. Allow it to complete the rinse countdown

  3. The system will return to normal operation

Afterward:

  • Run a tub or fixture without screens

  • Avoid fixtures with aerators initially

  • Confirm water is running clear throughout the home

Expected Results

A properly performed super flush resolves cloudy or discolored water in most cases. If symptoms persist after completing these steps, further evaluation may be needed.
